Your Privacy
If you're here, you trusted us with something real. That means we owe you a straight answer about how this site works.
Last updated: June 29, 2026
The Short Version
- 1.We collect your email if you subscribe to the newsletter or create an account.
- 2.We use privacy-friendly analytics and session replay (PostHog, hosted in the EU) to understand and improve the site. It is on by default outside the EU, UK, and Quebec; inside them, it only runs if you opt in. Replay always masks what you type, and you can change your choice anytime below.
- 3.We will never sell your data to anyone.
- 4.You can see what we have, fix it, or delete your account anytime. Just email us at hello@bebetteroffline.org.
What We Collect
Your email address
When you subscribe to the newsletter or create an account, you give us your email address. We use it to send you what you asked for, like the newsletter or account messages, and nothing else. We do not add you to any list you did not choose.
Basic account information
If you choose to create an account, we also store your display name and the activity connected to your account (such as saved articles, reading history, comments, and article reactions). You control what you share, and you can delete your account anytime.
Site analytics
We use PostHog for analytics. PostHog runs on servers in Frankfurt, Germany (EU). For visitors who are not signed in, analytics stays completely anonymous everywhere: no cookies, no stored IP address, nothing tied to an account. What it collects: pages visited, time on page, basic device type (phone or desktop), and approximate country.
For members, we connect this activity to your member account (your account id, never your email or name) so we can understand how members like you use the site. This is on by default outside the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Quebec. If you are in one of those places, it stays off unless you choose to turn it on. Either way, you can see and change your choice anytime below or on your journey page.
Session replay
We also use session replay. This records how people move through the site — the pages they visit and where they click — so we can see what is confusing and make it better. It is masked, which means it never captures what you type, such as your email, your comments, or anything you enter in a form, and it never records your keystrokes. For members, replay follows the same rule as connected analytics above: on by default outside the EU, UK, and Quebec, opt-in inside them. We never sell or share this data, and we never use it for advertising.
Your analytics choice
Your Member Profile
When you create an account, you can tell us a bit about your situation, such as whether you are a first-time manager or leading a bigger team. You can also react to articles, mark what you tried and how it went (with an optional note), save things for later, and build a reading history. All of this is optional, and you can see and edit it anytime on your journey page.
We use this information for three things, and only these three things: to personalize what we show you on the site, to show aggregated patterns like “most people in your situation found this helpful” (never tied to your name or account), and to learn what actually helps people, so we can make the content better. We do not sell it, share it with third parties, or use it for advertising.
Your data stays yours. To get a copy of your member data, or to have it deleted, email us at hello@bebetteroffline.org. We never store your password. Signing in happens through Clerk, using a one-tap link or a code emailed to you.
How We Use Your Data
We use your data for two things, and only these two things:
- 1. To send you what you asked for (newsletter, account communications).
- 2. To understand how the site is being used so we can make it better.
We do not use your data for advertising. We do not build profiles to sell or share with third parties. We do not use your data to train AI models.
Your Choices
You always have the following options. To use any of them, email us at hello@bebetteroffline.org. We will take care of it.
- See what we have. Ask what personal information we hold about you and receive a copy.
- Fix it. If something we hold is inaccurate, ask us to correct it.
- Delete your account. When you do, we remove your personal information — email, display name, and profile. Comments or reactions you posted stay on the site but are no longer connected to your name; they appear as being from a removed member, so conversations stay intact for everyone else.
- Unsubscribe. Every newsletter email includes a one-click unsubscribe link.
- Opt out of analytics and replay. Signed-out visitors are always anonymous. Members can turn connected analytics and replay on or off anytime on this page or the journey page.
Services We Use
Here are the services that handle data on our behalf. Each operates under its own privacy policy and a data processing agreement with us.
| Service | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Vercel | Hosts the website | United States |
| Resend | Sends the newsletter | United States |
| PostHog | Cookieless analytics | Frankfurt, EU |
| Clerk | Sign-in for accounts | United States |
PostHog's privacy policy is at posthog.com/privacy.
How Long We Keep Your Data
- Newsletter email: kept until you unsubscribe, then removed from our active list promptly.
- Account information: kept while your account is active; removed when you delete your account, as described above.
- Analytics data: aggregate and anonymous. Because it is not linked to you personally, individual retention periods do not apply in the same way.
No Sale of Personal Data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone, for any reason, ever.
If Something Goes Wrong
If we become aware of a security incident that affects your personal information, we will contact you directly and take immediate steps to address it. We will also notify the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec (CAI) if required under Quebec's Law 25.
Children
Be Better Offline is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with their information, please email hello@bebetteroffline.org and we will delete it promptly.
Language
This site and all communications are in English.
Changes to This Page
If we make meaningful changes to how we collect or use your data, we will update this page and the date at the top. For significant changes, we will also notify newsletter subscribers by email.
